about the artist
Sonia Saavedra is a Mexican artist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Working primarily in ceramic sculpture, she creates hybrid figures and symbolic objects that explore memory, myth, and lived experience. Drawing and writing accompany her sculptural research.
She studied biology at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and psychology at the Universidad Latinoamericana. This background informs her interest in the relationship between the body, perception, and the ways people construct meaning.
Her work has been exhibited in Puebla, Mexico, and at ArtPrize 2026 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her ceramic practice includes research into clay bodies, glaze formulation, and firing processes.
